Excuse Me, While I Touch the Sky

Face it. If you play the accordion, you are not only a musician–you are also an athlete. Playing the accordion requires physical strength and endurance. If you were not an athlete when you started playing, you became one with playing.

I don’t know about you, but I play best when I stand. The accordion I play weighs about 24 lbs. That’s a lot of weight to hold and maneuver while playing music. It’s no wonder that accordion players need to be in good physical shape.

One of the most beneficial things you can do for your body as an accordion player is to stretch. Do it now, please. Any body part will do. Stretching helps to loosen up your muscles and prevent injuries. Doesn’t that feel better?

The great thing about stretching is that you can do it anywhere at just about any time. Think of yourself as a lion or lioness. You know how they stretch? Massively, and with complete abandon. Stretching should be a regular part of your routine as an accordion player.

Here is one of my favorite stretches. I call it Touch the Sky. Stand with your feet about 12 to 15 inches apart. Raise your hands and really try to touch the ceiling. Hold it for about 10 seconds and try to keep attempting to increase your reach. I do at least 10 or 15 of these daily.

Touch the Sky is a great stretch because it strengthens your back and relieves any stress you may be having. It’s also a great way to improve your posture and increase your flexibility.

In addition to stretching, there are other things you can do to stay in shape as an accordion player. Regular exercise, such as cardio and strength training, can help improve your endurance and strength. Eating a healthy diet and getting enough sleep are also important for maintaining good health.

Playing the accordion is a physically demanding activity, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. By taking care of your body and staying in shape, you’ll be able to play better and enjoy the experience even more.

Try out Touch the Sky and let me know what you think in the comments section below. Do you have any other favorite stretches or exercises that help you stay in shape as an accordion player? Share them with us!
